MIRAMICHI HISTORICAL SITES

Irish Historical Park

Irish Historical Park The Miramichi was a point of arrival for many immigrants. The Chatham Mercury reported 29th May 1826, that about 1500 immigrants had arrived by that date. In July 1827 the Eleanor arrived with about 200 passengers, and much sickness. A Quarantine station was established on Middle Island in 1827. In 1986 the Miramichi Irish Festival erected a Celtic Cross on the island and a historic park was established that was devoted to the memory of the Irish Immigrants that lived and died in the Miramichi. The park has an interpretive centre, and is dominated by a large Celtic cross.

Scottish Interpretive Centre

Ariel View of Wilson's Point
Wilsons Point is a site with great significance to the history of Miramichi. Many of the earliest English speaking settlers lived and were buried in this area and it holds the history of our Scottish ancestors. This historic site is dedicated to the Scottish settlers that established the first English-speaking settlements in the area. A replica of the first Presbyterian Church and an interpretive centre are two of its attractions.

Boishebert National Historic Site

Marquis Du Boishebert
The Boishebert National Historic Site of Canada and Wilson's Point make up the site where, under the leadership of Charles Deschamps de Boishébert, many Acadians sought refuge when they were being expelled by the English from Acadia. Unfortunately when they arrived, they found little shelter and very little food. It was first settled by the Mi'kmaq people and it shows the evolution of Indian, Acadian, and Scottish peoples since that time. Guided tours are available to the island which includes an interpretation centre and cemetery.

Beaubear's Island National Historic Site

Beaubear's Island Ship Building Interpretive Centre A National Historic Site, the island is likely the only preserved shipbuilding site left in Canada. The island is located in the centre of the city, but is only accessible by boat. The island was once the focal point of the area’s bustling shipbuilding industry.
